The IBEW opposed any and all attempts to privatize Social Security by draining dollars into individual retirement accounts. Social Security benefits are guaranteed for life and increase with the cost of living, unlike private accounts that rise and fall with the stock market. Individual retirement accounts would require taxes to be raised and would increase the federal budget deficit, jeopardizing benefit payments needed to pay current and future retirees. Bill Ref.
