Congress Common Cause and a coalition of groups sent a letter to all members of the House urging them to vote in favor of H.R. 5349, to extend the Protect America Act of 2007. for 21 days in order to resolve the differences between the House and Senate versions of the bill. The letter noted that the unprecedented surveillance of American citizens without a warrant is far too important an issue to be decided in a matter of days. Common Cause and a coalition of groups send a letter to Senate Majority Leader Reid (D-NV) urging that wiretapping legislation expected to come to the floor in January not include a statutory grant of retroactive immunity to telecommunications companies for illegal wiretapping. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Common Cause joined with other groups in "the Matter of Digital Audio Broadcasting Systems and Their Impact on Terrestrial Radio Broadcast Services" (MM Docket No. 99-325). The groups replied to previous comments by the National Association of Broadcasters and other organizations. Common Cause joined with other groups in a Petition for Reconsideration (MM Docket No. 00-168), asking the FCC to reconsider aspects of the 2008 Order relating to the revised newspaper-broadcast cross-ownership rule ("NBCO rule"), the grandfathering of existing unlawful combinations, and the decision to keep the current local television and radio limits at their present levels.
