Public Access to Federally Funded Research: Joined 125 other scientific societies and publishing organizations to oppose a proposed administrative policy proposal that would force the immediate free distribution of peer-reviewed journal articles reporting on federally funded research. The proposed mandate would significantly harm the peer-review process that helps ensure the quality and integrity of scientific research. More specifically, the immediate free distribution of such content would have significant repercussions on the scientific research community by threatening the scholarly publishing process, reducing the time to recover our investment, and potentially weakening the value of our journals.

Provided inputs to the House Science Committee (majority staff) on their Civil Space Situational Awareness Transition Act discussion draft. AIAA asked that the legislation take into account the changing landscape, including the worsening debris problem, rapid advancement of technology, and movement by international actors. AIAA also highlighted the progress in the private sector and the capabilities that the USG can leverage from industry. Concerns were raised about NASA's role and the agency serving in a regulatory role. Provided inputs to Senator John Hickenlooper's staff on his orbital debris mitigation discussion draft bill. AIAA expressed serious concerns about NASA taking the lead to solve the orbital debris problem because it is not a regulatory agency. The task is better suited for the Department of Commerce/Office of Space Commerce; though, NASA is the appropriate agency to lead the technology needed for execution of debris remediation missions and for development/demonstration of that technology. Separately, AIAA called on Congress to clarify processes for jurisdiction, control, authorization, and continuing supervision for new commercial activities in space to fulfill our national legal obligations as required per Article VI of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.
